The Royal Sampler Food Tour - Details

The MS Royal Sampler Food Tour enables you to sample a few unique foods that Montreal is known for that you cannot get anywhere else, at least not with any level of authenticity. Although some interesting information about Montreal is provided, the focus of the MS Royal Sampler Food Tour is the enjoyment derived from riding a scooter, and of course the food. It is not a comprehensive historical tour of the city.

Although most people have little to no difficulty riding a scooter, individuals who struggle with balance on bicycles, are afraid of city traffic, or are accident prone in general, should think twice before taking this tour. If any member of your group falls into the above categories, it is possible for them to ride with a guide or another member of your group who is comfortable with a passenger, but the price remains the same per person. Each rider will be given a brief tutorial on how to ride a scooter before the tour begins, but the tutorial is not a substitute for a full scooter course. For new riders, the learning curve could be anywhere from 5 - 30 minutes. The tour begins in Old Montreal with lower speeds and progresses to faster speeds over the course of the tour.

All tours end by climbing Mount Royal with ease, hence the name “Royal” Sampler.

For regular group sizes of 5 or less, please arrive at the time of your scheduled tour. Paperwork and helmet fitment will take about 5 - 10 minutes, the tutorial will take 10 - 20 minutes and you should expect to depart approximately 15 - 30 minutes after your arrival. Larger groups of 6+ should plan to arrive 10 - 15 minutes earlier than their scheduled tour time.

2 Hour Royal Sampler Food Tour (Semiprivate or Private Tour)

Deciding between Semiprivate and Private

  • If you book for 3 or more people, this is automatically a private tour. Your group will have the full attention of our guide(s).

  • If you book a semiprivate tour for 1 or 2 people, there is the possibility of another group of up to 2 people joining your group. If you think a member of your group will have a longer than average learning curve in operating a scooter, or has special dietary requirements, you must book a private tour.

  • If your group consists of 1 or 2 people, and you wish to guarantee privacy, you may opt to pay $10/person more for a private tour.

Rough Itinerary

In this tour, you will have to make 2 choices of what you would like to eat:

Choice 1 - 1) steamed hot dog, or 2) bagel

Choice 2 - 1) smoked meat, 2) poutine, or 3) Portuguese chicken sandwich

If you choose the steamed hot dog, we will travel to Montreal Pool Room. If you have already tried the steamed hot dogs there, we can try the ones from the nearby La Belle Province for comparison. We will then make our way towards Schwartz’s Deli to sample their famous smoked meat sandwich. If you have already tried it, we can try one from The Main Deli Steakhouse across the street, who many people think provide a superior smoked meat sandwich experience to Schwartz’s. If you chose the bagel over the hot dog, we will then head to St-Viateur Bagel. If you have already tried St-Viateur, we can try one from Fairmount Bagel, who many people prefer over St-Viateur. If you chose the poutine, we will head to La Banquise next. If you chose the Portuguese chicken sandwich, we will head to Ma Poule Mouillée. No tour of Montreal would be complete without a visit to the top of Mount Royal.

All food, San Pelligrino, and bottled water is included in the tour cost.
